Department of history

Its Origin

The department was introduced in 1984 with the establishment of the college in HS classes. The college was started as a night college. Ms Senehi Begum of Handique Girls College served as the first faculty of the department. Then Dr Chandana Sarma, Dr Surajit Barua and Dr Bikash Nath served the Department. Presently the Department have three permanent teachers, namely Dr Anjali Patowary, Mrs. Sikha Das and Md. Magrul Hussain. Dr. Orchid Barua heas been providing her service to the department since (year ) as an Assistant Professor on a contractual basis.

In 2003, Major Course was introduced in the department. The enrolment of the students over the years have been very encouraging and since then the department produced some good students through the years. Many students secured first class, completed their higher studies from Central University, Gauhati University, Cotton University, some completed LLB and other professional courses. The passed out students engaged themselves in different private sector and Government services, some joined in Education Department.

Activities

The Department of History organises various programmes round the year for the students. Moreover the Faculty members apart from academic activities take the responsibility of various co-curricular activities of the college and contribute to its overall development. The students of the department have also joined in various activities organised by the college.

1.The Department of History organises various programmes like Seminars/Talk, Field trip, Quiz competition etc every year.

2.Under the supervision of the faculty members the students of the Department have undertaken various Projects on regional and national issues.

  1. The Departmental Wall Magazine Anneshanprepared by the students.
  2. The Hand Written Magazine Oitijyapublished annually and prepared by the students.

5.The History Department celebrates some historically important days like Sukafa Diwas, Chilarai Diwas, Lachit Diwas.

  1. The Alumni of the Department delivers interactive lecture time to time for the benefit of the students.
  2. The Faculty members along with the students visit Old Age Homes, Shelter Homes and distribute clothes and food for them.
  3. The Faculty members provide financial assistance to the poor and needy students of the department.
  4. On the initiative of the faculty members, the students participated in the self-reliance program ‘Earn while you Learn’organised buy IQAC of the college.
  5. The students of the Department takes part in various outreach programmes organised by Extension Cell and NSS Unit of the college which helps in developing their social responsibility.
